In conjunction with Transport and Main Roads ($250,000) and Cloncurry Shire Council, the RFDS has resurfaced a worn out airstrip, to allow safer delivery of air services to the remote region, 180km north of Cloncurry.

Mount Isa RFDS clinical and base operations manager, Katrina Seng, said the donation made by a generous RFDS supporter was an amazing contribution to the Burke and Wills community.

"Our donor wanted to be involved in ensuring services could be delivered to the furthest corner," Ms Seng said.

"With her donation we are happy to upgrade one of our remote strips which has a significant traffic thoroughfare on that stretch of road.

"It is definitely a spot that RFDS has serviced over the years and will continue to service."

Ms Seng said the previous strip was never in great condition and was in need of works.

"The damage to the airstrip was from wear and tear over the years," she said.

"So the upgrade has some significant earthworks to ensure it is flatter and has the right approach and is serviceable throughout the whole year.

"Other airstrips around the region become unusable during big rain, so a big, waterproof strip like this will ensure we can continue our service to a broad, vast area."

Works to the Burke and Wills Airstrip have been completed and an official opening is yet to be announced.

The news comes two months after the Burke and Wills Roadhouse changed hands.
