The retired rugby league champion and now ambassador for the game arrived in Mount Isa today for the Isa Street Festival and also to speak to schools with his Johnathan Thurston Academy.
The day focused on teaching young students about the importance of mental health and not bullying one another.
JT was excited to be back in Mount Isa.
"It's great to be here in Mount Isa with my academy, it has such a massive rugby league community," Thurston said.
"Mental health and anti-bullying is extremely important, especially in regional areas, so I am happy to be here raising awareness about the issue."
Thurston said it was okay to ask for help.
"It is important to have a positive routine, and to practice putting bad thoughts in the bin," he said.
"I also tell the kids to think about the school being a team and their teachers being coaches."
After his speech students were given the opportunity to ask questions.
At Good Shepherd Catholic College the pupils asked a wide range of questions from how he got to where he is and how he handled pressure, hate and setbacks.
Thurston will take part in tonight's Isa Street Parade (August 7) and will be riding on the Council's float, where he will distribute signed JT Academy mini-footballs.
He can also be found in a meet and greet at the Community Connect Zone before and after the parade from 5pm to 6pm, and from 7pm to 8pm
