Playgroup Queensland is holding a Pop Up Playgroup at its Mount Isa Playgroup Centre next week designed for young children with developmental delays or those who have autism spectrum disorder.
The Pop Up Playgroup will take place on Thursday February 27 from 9.30am to 11am at the Mount Isa Playgroup Hub, 2 Daphne Street.
Alison Mackenzie, MyTime and PlayConnect coordinator, said the purpose of the playgroup was to provide an environment for families to connect and to find out what local support services they can access.
"The Pop Up Playgroup is also a perfect way for young children aged from birth-to-six to enjoy the activities that support those with autism or developmental delays," Ms Mackenzie said.
"Sometimes parents can feel isolated. The Pop Up Playgroup is an opportunity to meet others on a similar journey and build connections.
"In regional areas there can be limited face-to-face opportunities where parents can access information , Pop Up Playgroup provides this in a child-friendly and supportive way."
Pop Up Playgroups are important because in 2018, Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect) revised its autism prevalence rates from one in 100 to an estimated one in 70 people in Australia on the autism spectrum.
Autism is a lifelong developmental condition that affects, among other things, the way an individual relates to his or her environment and their interactions with other people.
There is no known cause or cure, but young children with autism who receive the recommended early intervention have a much greater chance, later in life of living independently, securing employment and developing meaningful and lasting friendships (AEIOU Foundation).
All families living in the Mount Isa region with a child with a developmental delay or autism spectrum disorder aged from birth-to-six are invited to attend the Pop Up Playgroup.
"All parents want the best for their child," Mrs Mackenzie said.
"This Pop Up Playgroup can empower parents by connecting them to local supports and introducing their child to a world of play where the focus is on supporting them to achieve their developmental and social goals."
