It probably comes as no surprise to long-suffering Mount Isa drivers but the North West is home to Queensland's most expensive fuel.

RACQ named Mount Isa as the most expensive centre in regional Queensland to fill up the tank last month.
According to RACQ's Monthly Fuel Price Report, Mt Isa drivers paid an average price of 149 cents per litre (cpl) for unleaded petrol (ULP) during April, while Longreach came in second most expensive with an average of 135.8cpl.
RACQ spokesperson Renee Smith said it was disappointing record low oil prices due to COVID-19 and a price war between Saudi Arabia and Russia did not flow on as savings at the bowser.
"Given the unprecedented falls in the oil price and the Townsville Terminal Gate Price, we would have liked to see prices drop by at least another 30cpl in the region," Ms Smith said.
"Fuel companies in the north west failed to pass those savings on to motorists, which is really disappointing for essential workers requiring fuel.
"Instead we saw an average indicative retail margin of a whopping 51.5cpl in Mt Isa, and 40.7cpl in Longreach. These are incredibly high margins for retailers.
"Longreach was also the most expensive centre in regional Queensland for diesel, with the average price in April of 143.9cpl."
Ms Smith said regardless of where motorists lived, they should still shop around for the best deal and reward those charging the lowest prices.
"There isn't as much competition in places like Mt Isa and Longreach, but motorists should always support the cheapest retailer in the area.
"Global factors are out of our control, but we can all choose where we spend our money, so make sure before you jump in the car you check out a fuel price comparison service, like RACQ's Fair Fuel Finder, to find the best price in near you.
"Competition helps keep prices low and every Queenslander has a part to play in this."
