But as time has gone on Cameron Hilder has taken the role in his strides.
"It's my first on-air radio job, the way I landed it was a case of right place, right time and of course JB," Mr Hilder said.
"Last year I was studying a radio course at the Australian Film Television and Radio School, so I got sent to 102.5 Hit Fm as part of a work experience setup, and worked with JB for the week.
"Then he got offered another opportunity, and I was lucky enough to be top of mind for the bosses when they were looking for someone else. It's the way most people in radio get their jobs."
So far Mr Hilder has felt right at home in his new job.
"I'm a country boy from a small town in Central West New South Wales called Trangie so its been great to be able to reconnect with my roots in certain aspects on the show," Mr Hilder said.
"Everyone loves being here in Isa, I've spoken to loads of people who say the same thing how everyone moves here for a short stint of work, and they stay here because they love it.
"It's very easy to feel welcomed and happy in a place where everyone is glad to be there."
However, Mr Hilder didn't always have aspirations of talking on the radio.
"I'm not one of those radio people that grew up wanting to be an announcer," he said.
"Like a lot of people, up until about two years ago I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life.
"I was studying a university course I didn't really care about and then a friend of mine said the local radio station in Wollongong were looking for a street teamer (like the HIT squad in Mount Isa who promote the station).
"I had no idea what they did but I was keen to check it out, so I took the job. On my first day at the station I got to take a look at the studio and saw how it all worked, and I had one of those moments and thinking this is what I'm going to do."
Mr Hilder said it's hard to pinpoint the best thing about radio.
"It's really hard to pick one thing. I love the music and the talking behind it all, but honestly I think the thing I love the most is all the moving parts of the show - actually pushing all the buttons, lining up the songs, making sure everything sounds good, I'm a bit of a nerd when it comes to all that," he said.
Mt Hilder then finished by asking his listeners to not hate him for who he barracks for in the NRL.
"I'm a massive Sydney Roosters and NSW Blues fan, which I know isn't too popular in Mount Isa but I'm glad everyone loves their footy," he said.
"I could talk about anything to do with music all day long, and I love people; I love meeting new people, having a laugh and trying my best to brighten someone's day."
You can hear Cameron every weekday on 102.5 Hit Fm Mount Isa from 6am to 10am including some weekends.
