During an interview with The North West Star, Mayor Greg Campbell said eighteen months on from the monsoonal event that saw more than half a million stock lost across the North West, Cloncurry could not have asked for a better road out of the devastation.
"Cloncurry was hit hard by the event and was the third worst hit shire for stock deaths (86,008) behind Winton (97,702) and McKinlay (144,658)," Cr Campbell said.
"However off the back of some pretty strong cattle prices, we couldn't have asked for a better path out. We know people have less stock but the stock they do have is probably worth the same amount.
"After the flood we didn't have too bad of a season. We also haven't been drought declared unlike neighbouring regions to the east including McKinlay, Richmond Hughenden and I think it highlights the durability of the country in this shire."
Cr Campbell said the Council had forecast dips in income this year, but most grazing families had recovered well.
"We were forecasting to see dips in income this year, but I think for most, that income has held strong," he said.
"There has been some Cloncurry families who have paid good prices for high profile properties, so I think it shows the strength in grazing families in our region."
Cr Campbell said the conditions of this year were also looking profitable, with a bit of winter rain and a looming La Nina.
"A little bit of winter rain generally scares the hell out of people because it can kill off the grass, but now we are having warmer days half an inch will see a green shoot come away which is what we have seen in the region," he said.
"Also the Bureau's prediction of an average or better than average wet give us the chance of having a green Christmas. Which will lift everyone's spirits."
