On Tuesday November 17, The Governor-General David Hurley and his wife Linda had the honour of cutting the ribbon to a newly planted tuckeroo tree (cupaniopsis anacardioides) in the library garden, in honour of the pioneers that established the Mount Isa community.
Governor-General David Hurley said they had received a warm welcome to Mount Isa and was proud to acknowledge the founding pioneers.
"A very important anniversary coming up for Mount Isa, in 2023 with the discovery of minerals here which created the city we have here today," he said.
"When you think back as a child, if you're my age back in the 60s, reading about how Australia was growing after the war, the big ore deposits around the country were often the stories of Australia emerging.
"The questions you would have in class like: where are deposits of zinc, you knew Mount Isa, because Mount Isa was an emerging part of the country post-war."
Mount Isa Mayor Danielle Slade said the tree planting was to remember mining pioneers who came to Mount Isa in the hope of building a better life for themselves and their families.
"To remember those pioneers who built a life for themselves and in the process built a mining community that has lasted for nearly 100 years.
"I had an opportunity to talk to the Governor-General and talk about 2023, 100 year celebration and it was only appropriate that we did a tree planting ceremony here today for all the pioneers who helped get the mining industry started here in Mount Isa and made Mount Isa the prosperous city it is today.
"I know there ex-Mount Isans that hold this city in their hearts and we cannot thank the pioneers enough for what they've done."
Following the tree planting ceremony the Governor-General was taking a tour of the Mount Isa Mines.
