McKinlay Shire Council
Reps from the North West Hospital and Health Service addressed the meeting re local issues. The McKinlay Bush Nurse Clinic will not be closed. There maybe some difficulty around backing up the Bush Nurse when he takes leave but there is definitely no intention to close it. There is no also intention to close the Julia Creek MPHS. The reduction from level two facilities to level 1 is due to not being able to recruit nurses and a doctor, not a budgetary issue. The NWHHS HR Recruitment section is advertising for nurses but there has been no uptake for these positions. The state decision mandating Covid-19 vaccinations to be administered by doctors and commencing March exacerbates the pressure on availability. NWHHS pays nearly twice as much for nursing staff as the south east, so it's not a matter of money. Nursing ratios for aged care is legislated and differs from private aged care facilities. There needs to be a change in legislation to better enable the return of aged care patients. Council and the CAN will contact the Office of the Chief Nurse Shelley Nolan to discuss changing requirements around nurses to enable aged care to re-commence at the Julia Creek MPHS. The Mayor supported by the Deputy Mayor and chair of the CAN will meet the Minister for Health to initially seek the resumption of aged care services at the Julia Creek MPHS and ultimately to restore the service to level 2. The main objective remains unchanged which is to secure the return of the health services at the Julia Creek MPHS to level 2.
