Sam Fryer, 31, was named Queensland champion this week among the seven state and territory winners of the 2021 Cattle Council of Australia/NAB Agribusiness Rising Champion Initiative.
Now in its eleventh year, the program is designed to foster the leadership and business skills of emerging beef industry leaders aged between 21-40.
With all of this year's winners already actively involved in the beef industry, the program presents an unrivalled opportunity for the group to take their personal career development to the next level and network with industry and government representatives.
North Queensland beef producer Sam Fryer will now attend an all-expenses paid Leadership Development week in Canberra.
Based at Ellington Park Station, Prairie, Sam is a partner in his family's beef production business and is also northern accounts manager for livestock software company Black Box Co, helping beef producers to manage their data to improve herd productivity.
Having previously worked in different roles in the industry including in the Northern Territory, Sam is an advocate for creating supported pathways into the industry for young people.
"We need a paradigm shift about all the opportunities for young people in this industry," he said.
"There are so many innovators and entrepreneurs that can be showcased. We need to shine a light on the positive stories so young people leaving school know working in the beef industry offers so many career pathways."
NAB Executive Regional and Agribusiness, Julie Rynski, congratulated Sam and the other state winners.
"Year in and year out, the Rising Champions Initiative attracts some of the best and brightest young people in the beef industry, and this year has been no exception," Ms Rynski said.
"The 2021 cohort represents such a diverse set of skills and aspirations, and the group leaves me with no doubt the future of the Australian cattle industry is in very good hands."
Cattle Council president, Markus Rathsmann, said the program would give the winners a unique insight into industry leadership and policy development.
