In the 1860s the brand new colony of Queensland issued licences for Bowen Downs sheep and cattle station north of Longreach. Bowen Downs extended along the Thomson River and its tributaries to Muttaburra. In 1870 more than a thousand cattle disappeared from the station. This event would have grave consequences some years later to the town of Roma, 700kms south.
