That place for female victims is the Mount Isa PCYC and more specifically the RUBY program.
RUBY stands for Rise Up, Be Yourself and it is a free strength training program for women who are, have been, or likely to be experiencing domestic and family violence.
Sergeant Bernadette Strow said the sessions were run by a female group fitness trainer with a female Queensland Police Officer also attending each week.
"The program is designed to empower women by building physical strength and contributing to general well-being, emotional resilience, self-esteem and confidence through physical exercise in a violence free and safe environment," Sgt Strow said.
"RUBY is a unique program allowing participants a different outlet and tools to combat the domestic violence cycle by fostering connected relationships with other women."
Domestic and family violence liaison officer Lisa Hillary will head the program.
"We hope the uptake for RUBY increases this year, it could be anyone that is affected by domestic violence so we want to help everyone we can," Sgt Hillary said.
"I cover as far north as Mornington Island and as far south as Birdsville. There are challenges with the remoteness but once you realise how the community works together you feel how rewarding work can be, RUBY will fall into that category."
