Resources Minister Scott Stewart was in Mount Isa Friday but made no effort to speak to local media instead hiding behind a statement from a stakeholder engagement session saying all Queenslanders benefitted from the resources sector.
"Queensland is fortunate to be rich in resources, and home to the North West Minerals Province which is one of the world's richest mineral-producing regions," Mr Stewart said.
"Mount Isa has always been a traditional resources powerhouse but there are more opportunities to develop new mineral deposits in the region like scandium, vanadium and cobalt and this plan is about helping bring this to a reality."
Mr Stewart said the development plan set out a 30 year vision for the resources sector's future and included a range of actions and initiatives to realise this vision.
"There will be a key focus on removing barriers to resources industry growth, helping regional communities recover from the impacts of COVID-19 and responsibly unlocking our precious resources," he said.
"Our resources sector is, and will continue to be, the backbone of Queensland's economic recovery and, through the development of this plan, we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to shape its future."
Mr Stewart said the resources industry supports more than 71,000 jobs across Queensland, particularly in regions like Mount Isa.
"I encourage anyone who wants to get involved in planning our future to visit resources.qld.gov.au/qridp and have their say by filling out a survey or joining the online discussion," he said.
"The findings of this engagement will form the basis of a draft plan that we will be releasing later this year."
