Council has approved a tender for $2.9m for the provision of smart meters for all of its 7200 water meters through an Advanced Metering Infrastructure System.
A company called Suez Water won the contract for $2,930,093 and they will replace all of the existing 20 and 25mm meters, as well provide a dedicated communication network to support remote reading, a meter management system to collect, store and manage the data that is retrieved, and a customer web portal.
Cr Paul Stretton said the project was "long overdue" and would make tracking of water usage in the city a lot easier for customers and for council.
Mayor Danielle Slade said if there was a hidden water leak on a property the new system will pick it up, potentially saving the resident a significant amount of money.
The project is a joint initiative of Mount Isa City Council and the Queensland Government with $1.77 million in funding from the Queensland Government's 2019-21 Local Government Grants and Subsidy Program, and $1.18 million from Council.
In a late item of business Council also approved a tender for $1.2m to design and construct the Gallipoli Park pump track.
Council was granted $895,000 for the project from the Queensland Government's Active Community Infrastructure Projects to install a state-of-the-art asphalt pump track on the southern end of the park and after calling for tenders Council has now awarded the design and construct contract to Townsville-based Transcape Constructions for $1.177.845.
Council also increased the project budget to $1,523,021.
Cr Peta MacRae said the project would go a long way towards the liveability of the city.
Mayor Danielle Slade said she couldn't wait to take her children to the pump track when it is built.
