The Gallipoli Park Pump Track was the brainchild of the former McCulloch council after receiving $895,000 funding from the Queensland Government's Active Community Infrastructure Projects funding program in 2019.

Mount Isa City Council mayor Danielle Slade and Queensland Minister for Resources Scott Stewart opened the new $1.4 million precinct, stating the finished product was "incredible".

"There is no doubt that the staff at council put in a tremendous effort here. The funding from the state government nearly paid for the entire works, which was fantastic," Cr Slade said.

"The initial plans were put to the community and then the community told us what they wanted, so this is a result of a great collaboration between council and the community. Since this has been here we've had hundreds and hundreds of families utilising this space.

"A big thankyou to all the councillors, this was their brainchild, along with council staff from the previous term. It is so great to see to fruition."

Cr Slade said encouraging Mount Isa's livability with projects like the pump track was a great way to keep families in town.

"Our job as a council is about livability for people. We have the jobs but we need people to bring their families and stay, and this is a part of that," she said.

"There is no doubt we are a mining city and mining is extremely important to us, so it's very suitable that we have the Minister of Resources here to open this pump track."

The new precinct includes the pump track, barbecues and shade shelters, ninja circuit and amenities.

Queensland Minister for Resources Scott Stewart said he was blown away by the quality of the pump track.

"When I turned up and had a look at this park, I was blown away," Minister Stewart said.

"It is initiatives like this that induce workers to bring their families out here. When they bring their families they are more invested into the community, they spent money locally into our community but it also means we start to build that social capital. So as a government we see the value in infrastructure like this, this is amazing.

"It's about providing those opportunities to families to come and enjoy the time outdoors, especially in the winter months, but also about providing opportunities for kids into the future."
